Telematics explained

What telematics is, and why it matters to critical fleets

Telematics turns every vehicle into a live source of data. For utilities, emergency services and other critical fleets, that means moving from operating blindly and reactively to proactive, data-driven decisions — on one secure, UK-built platform.

01 · What is telematics

Telecommunications and informatics, working together

Telematics is the fusion of telecommunications and informatics, turning every vehicle into a source of continuous, real-time operational insight. Without connected data, fleet operations lack visibility and real-world context, making it hard to see how vehicles are actually being used on the road. Telematics replaces these blind spots with continuous insight — streaming real-time data from every vehicle, from location, engine health and mileage to driving style and more.

Every mile driven, every stop made and every engine event is recorded, turning raw data into actionable information that reflects true utilisation, risk, efficiency and overall fleet performance. Instead of relying on anecdotal evidence, organisations work from a shared source of truth that every stakeholder can access — supporting faster decisions, reducing avoidable cost and improving safety through data that is accurate, reliable and available when it is needed.

How a telematics system works

Streaming real-time data

Data flows from the in-vehicle Remote Telematics Unit, over the mobile network to Microsoft Azure, and into the Airmax Portal
01

Capture in the vehicle

An in-vehicle device (the RTU) connects to the vehicle and, with GPS and onboard sensors, records location, diagnostics, mileage and driver behaviour in real time.

02

Transmit securely

Every event is sent over the mobile network in near real-time to UK-hosted servers on Microsoft Azure, where it is processed, formatted and made ready to use.

03

Act in the Portal

In the Airmax Portal, raw data becomes live maps, alerts, league tables and reports — the insight your teams use to make proactive decisions.

02 · How it is installed

Professionally fitted, with minimal downtime

Our own engineers install and configure every device — in our bay or at your site. Plug-and-play hardware connects to the vehicle and starts transmitting straight away, so vehicles are back in service fast.

1

Survey & schedule

We confirm your vehicles and hardware, then book installs around your operations to avoid disruption.

2

Professional fit

An Airmax engineer fits the RTU into the vehicle — a clean, plug-and-play connection, hidden and tamper-resistant.

3

Configure & activate

The device is provisioned, connected to the Portal and verified — data starts flowing before we leave.

4

Ongoing support

Our UK field-support fleet maintains devices in life, keeping vehicles connected and data uninterrupted.

03 · The benefits

Visibility, efficiency, safety and compliance

Telematics replaces blind spots with insight. These are the day-to-day capabilities your fleet acts on — location, health, driver and cost intelligence, all attributed, all in one place.

Enhanced visibility

A live view of every vehicle's location and status. Dispatch the nearest unit, prove attendance and optimise response times.

Efficiency & utilisation

Expose idling, unproductive travel and excess stop time. Improve routes for fuel economy and reallocate vehicles to meet demand.

Safety & risk

Harsh braking, acceleration and speeding scored per driver. Risk profiling and league tables turn events into targeted coaching.

Proactive maintenance

Diagnostic codes, mileage and engine hours flag faults before breakdowns. Plan service around the data, cutting unplanned downtime.

Compliance & Duty of Care

Digitise paper processes for HMRC mileage and VAT. Timestamped proof of service and a defensible record of every journey.

Decarbonisation

Fuel, mileage and driving-style data underpins Net Zero. Identify underused vehicles and the right candidates for EV replacement.

One platform, serving every stakeholder

Telematics is a unified data platform — delivering targeted value to each department in your organisation.

The Fleet Manager

Concerned with the efficiency, allocation and health of the assets — transitioning from reactive maintenance to proactive planning.

Roadworthiness & maintenance

Automated alerts on diagnostic codes, mileage and engine hours to schedule service and minimise unplanned downtime.

Vehicle allocation

Utilisation reporting highlights under- and over-used vehicles, so the right vehicle is in the right location.

Procurement decisions

Deep performance and lifespan data informs what to buy and optimises Total Cost of Ownership.

Correct usage

Geofencing and curfew alerts keep vehicles used to policy — in hours and within authorised zones.

The Sustainability Manager

Telematics data is the critical pathway to achieving environmental targets and meeting reporting requirements.

Emissions tracking

Precise CO₂ and fuel-use data provides verifiable figures for sustainability reporting and targets.

Policy compliance

Behaviour monitoring identifies unnecessary idling, cutting wasted fuel and emissions.

EV transition strategy

Total Cost of Operation data, route analysis and charging needs identify the right vehicles to electrify.

The Driver

Transparency that supports personal development and takes the friction out of administrative tasks.

Training & safety

Drivers see their own behaviour stats and training needs, fostering safety awareness and positive coaching.

Expense reporting

Easily review trips for business vs private mileage, streamlining claims and HMRC compliance.

Digital communication

In-cab devices provide direct job dispatch and navigation, replacing paper itineraries.

The Data Teams

Analytics and systems teams leverage telematics for data integrity, reporting and integration.

Trend analysis & reporting

Access to raw and processed data for enterprise-wide analysis, supporting strategic decisions everywhere.

Integration

APIs and data feeds enable seamless integration into back-end systems for consolidated data management.

Collision & Insurance Team

In the event of an incident, telematics provides the factual evidence for rapid resolution and lower risk.

Immediate notification (FNOL)

Severe impacts are detected automatically and the First Notification of Loss is sent instantly — responding within the golden hour and mitigating inflated third-party claims.

Forensic data

Detailed telemetry — speed, heading, G-force and video where equipped — proves fault and expedites claims.
