RTU Failed Comms

The Support Team have reported an increasing number of issues during installation regarding the status of the yellow ‘Comms’ light of the RTU. Until the yellow ‘Comms’ light of the RTU remains ‘On’, no data will be sent from the RTU. Without this data, the Support Team operator will not be able to confirm all required data has been received, allowing the commission of the unit.

A flashing yellow ‘Comms’ light indicates the RTU has failed to communicate with the vehicle systems. It has been found that in a high number of cases, this is caused by the Molex connector (fig. 1) of the RTU not being fully seated into position. This is also attributable to RTU failure during service, resulting from the RTU losing communication with the vehicle systems due to a poor connection.

Required Action

In order to prevent installation and in life issues attributable to poor vehicle communication, it is recommended the fitting instructions are adhered to and the following actions are taken to ensure:

  1. The RTU connector is seated correctly and secured
  2. The OBD connection is made good and secured

This will also assist installers that may be experiencing issues with the yellow ‘Comms’ light flashing for prolonged periods during the installation process.

Fig. 2 below shows the Molex connector of the RTU sitting slightly proud of the housing, indicating the connector has not been inserted fully into the socket.

Fig. 3 below shows the Molex connector of the RTU inserted and seated correctly into the socket.

Note: Ensure the connector is inserted fully – a positive ‘click’ will confirm correct insertion, and should be slightly recessed as seen here

Important

It is a requirement that all installations are completed in accordance with the Installation and Commissioning Instructions. Failure to comply with the correct installation and commissioning process will result in RTU communication errors and a non reporting product.

Common Q & A’s and RTU LED flash explanations can also be found within the Installation and Commissioning Instructions. A ‘Quick Fit Guide’ can also be found on the reverse side of the Telematics Installation Form supplied with the product.
